Sqooll.com DIY pirate ship for Kids age 2 – 6

Recycled Materials:

  • Milk or juice carton (square base)
  • 1 TP roll
  • Egg carton
  • 2 wooden chopstick
Craft Materials:

  • Blu-Tak
  • Scissors
  • Paint / paintbrush

Step 1: Parent Prep (10 minutes)

  1. Clean and dry a 1L milk or juice carton

  3. Cut it in half lengthwise about 1/3 from the top. Poke a hole in the centre for 1 sail. Turn it over. Put it inside bottom half for the deck
  4. Cut a TP roll in half so you can open it flat. Punch 1 hole (at the top where you cut) in the middle and 1 hole at the bottom
  5. Use scissors to cut off 1 egg cup from the egg carton so it looks like a little bowl

Step 2: Create your DIY pirate ship (15 – 30 minutes)

  1. Show your child a picture of a pirate ship. Point out the different parts including the boat hull, deck and sails.
  2. Take out the bottom half of the carton. Help your child paint it. Let dry
  3. Make the sails! Help your child decorate the TP roll/sail.
  4. When the sails are ready, slide the end of a chopstick through the 2 holes in the TP roll. It will look like a sail billowing in the wind!
  5. Place a piece of Blu-Tak in the bottom of the boat to hold up your mast!
  6. Raise the Mast! Put the flat end of the chopstick/mast through the hole in the deck/top ship piece. Push down into the blu-tak so it is secured straight
  7. Sail Your Ship around the house!

Recycled Materials:

  • Clean plastic or foam food tray
Craft Materials:

Step 1: Parent Prep (5 minutes)

  1. Wash and dry your food tray
  2. Print and cut out sail template
  3. Take out a plastic straw and piece of Blu-tack

Step 2: Create your DIY pirate ship (5 – 10 minutes)

  1. Let’s make a pirate ship!

  3. Help your baby decorate the sails with crayons. Decorate both sides!
  4. Make the sails! Help your child decorate the TP roll/sail.
  5. Punch holes about 2 cm from the top and the bottom of the decorated sails. The holes should be aligned with the middle of the sail
  6. Thread the straw through the two holes
  7. It’s time to raise the sails!
  8. Show your baby how to stick the Blue-tack in the middle of the tray
  9. Gently push the straw into the Blue-tack so it stands upright in the “boat”
  10. Now you can sail your boat in the bath, sink or pool outside
